Course Description:
.

You will do many kinds of writing: pre-writing, drafting, revising, and follow-up writing.  You will write in class, at home, and, when assigned, in the Academic Success Center.

In class you will work with the whole class, in small groups, or in pairs to discuss your writing and the writings of others.

You will have conferences with your instructor and, when assigned, an Academic Success Center instructor to focus on your writing process and any special needs you may have.

You will learn:

--to understand more about how you write.

--to use writing as a way of exploring and communicating ideas.

--to make a point about a topic and support it so that a reader can understand it.

--to write with a specific audience and purpose in mind

--to organize your ideas into effective paragraphs

--to achieve competence in sentence form and verb form

--to use correct punctuation, vocabulary, spelling, and capitalization

Prerequisite:
There are no prerequisites for this course.

Grading Scale:

Grading Scale

A= 94-100

B=85-93

C=75-84

F=74 or below

NC=progress made but does not display readiness for ENG 100.

Attendance Requirements and Definitions:

Attendance Policy:

1.                  Because consistent practice in writing is essential for improvement, any absence can hinder your progress.

2.                  You must make up all missed work because one skill builds upon another, and for you to be considered for a final grade, you must complete all work.

3.                 An absence is defined as non-attendance for any reason, including illness, emergency, or official leave.  Also, being tardy three times will count as one absence.  The number of absences allowed for the semester is twice the number of times per week the class meets.  Before midterm, you will receive a grade of W if you exceed the allowed absences. After midterm if you have done passing work but you exceed the allowed absences, you will receive a grade of W.  If you have not done passing work and exceed the allowed absences, you will receive a grade of WF.

4.                 You should use your allowed absences for emergencies only; students who use all of the allowed absences usually find it impossible to complete the required work for the course satisfactorily.
