Instructor Contact Information:
You may email me or contact me by phone. I will respond within 48 hours. I do not check my phone messages or email on the weekends. Keep in mind that our college now closes at 1:30 pm on Fridays. If leaving a phone message: Include your name, time and day of call, and the phone number(s) where you can be reached. Be sure to speak slowly and clearly. If sending an email (preferred method): Include in the subject line in this order: Your name, Math 100 online. Emails without this subject may not be received.
Course Description:
This course covers the
following topics in an algebraic context: mathematical methods, techniques, ways
of thinking, and problem solving. Graphing is introduced and geometrical
applications are stressed. The course also reviews arithmetic operations and
develops skills in operations with algebraic expressions, polynomials, algebraic
fractions and solving linear equations.
Prerequisites: Math 032 or appropriate placement score.
Orientation Information:
There is no on-campus orientation for this course. In order to show that you have completed the REQUIRED orientation, I must receive your student contract BEFORE the first day of classes. Be sure to read the syllabus and orientation before sending your contract.
This class uses computer programs and the Internet to deliver content such as video lectures and printed solution manuals, present exercise problems for student interaction, and keep a record of student progress. Students working homework problems online will receive immediate feedback on their work. The tutorial assistance includes step-by-step instruction, a sample problem, printed text, and a video clip. You can work as many problems as you like on the computer. Since the class does not meet face-to-face, interaction with the instructor and other students will take place in an asynchronous discussion forum where students post questions, responses, and problem solutions at least one time a week. If you were taking this class in the traditional face-to-face format, your class would meet in a lecture room for five hours per week, and each student spends about ten hours per week outside of class on homework assignments. Online students should be prepared to spend 15 to 20 hours per week on this course since it may be necessary to account for communication delays and hardware problems in addition to the equivalent class time. Remember: This course may require more time than a traditional face-to-face class. Taking a course online requires both self discipline and time management skills. Your course is set up with a completion schedule. It is imperative that you adhere to the schedule in order to maintain a steady pace and to complete the course successfully. All of the homework and tests are available to you the first day of class. You are encouraged to work ahead and finish the course early.

Online Homework
and Testing:
All tests and homework are available from the first day of classes, but tests and homework must be completed by the due dates listed on the course schedule. You will find this in MyMathLab. Tests and homework may be taken early or but NOT late. There are no make-up tests. There are NO excuses. If you miss a test, you will be dropped from the course.
All chapter tests are online. Some are open ended and some are multiple choice. All are similar to the homework. The chapter tests do not have to be taken on campus. You may take them from your home, work, or anywhere else. You must come to the Airport campus for a midterm exam and the final exam. There are no exceptions. The midterm and final will be available in the Airport Student Center room 262. This is Student Assessment. You must have a picture id (a driver's license is fine). No children are permitted during testing. Only Airport Campus will have access to the final exam. The exams are only available on the Airport Campus.
The midterm and final will count as a zero if they are missed and WILL NOT BE DROPPED. There are no make-ups on these exams. If you are working ahead and would like to take either one early, please email me and we will make arrangements for you to do so.
The midterm is given after the college’s midterm date. You will be permitted to drop the course with no penalty and a grade of W if you go to records within 2 days of taking the midterm and drop the course. You must go to records to do this. If I withdraw you and you are failing the course, you will receive a WF.
