ENG032 Syllabus

Hello, Students--

Welcome to the Fall 09 Semester at Midlands Technical College. Whether a new or a returning student, congratulations on taking this step in your education. Developmental Studies Department instructors are committed to preparing you for the challenges ahead by working at your side to help you become independent, successful learners.  Achievement of your personal, educational, and professional goals is important to us.

Some of you may be just out of high school, while others may be returning to school after many years. Either way, becoming a successful student and lifelong learner is within your reach. To get the most of your opportunities here, you are encouraged to attend every class period. You’ve probably heard the old saying—showing up is half the battle. Well, old adages become well known because they do carry truth. So please, attend every class period and attend prepared. That means showing up having completed the required reading and assignments. In class, ask questions and participate in the discussions. And if you fall behind for any reason, get extra help right away from the tutors in the Academic Success Center or from your instructor.

Our department and college have tools and resources available to you if you begin to feel overwhelmed in either your studies or your personal life. While these are available to all students, you will not benefit from the tools and resources if you do not seek them out when needed. Check out the MTC Website, ask your teacher, or call this office for information on what the college has to offer. It’s also a good idea to build relationships here at Tech. Get to know your classmates and instructors. Build yourself a support system, a community of other learners like yourself. You might be surprised that the person who appears so different than you may actually be quite similar; both of you may share emotions and experiences regarding your quest for higher education. So take a chance and make a new friend.

College is challenging. College is a commitment. But most of all, college is rewarding, exciting, and invigorating. You hold the key to success. Thank you for allowing us to share this journey with you.
