COL 101  COLLEGE ORIENTATION 

1.0 Credit

This course may include selected topics such as career planning, study skills, stress management, tutoring, group guidance, and other subjects to facilitate student success.

COL 102  INTRODUCTION TO COLLEGE 

2.0 Credits

This course may include selected topics such as career planning, study skills, stress management, tutoring, group guidance, and other subjects to facilitate student success. (Pre-requisite: COL 106 and Co-requisite: Eng 032)

COL 103  COLLEGE SKILLS 

3.0 Credits

This course may include selected topics such as career planning, study skills, stress management, tutoring, group guidance and other subjects to facilitate student success. It focuses on listening skills, note-taking strategies, time management, textbook mastery, memory techniques and test-taking strategies, and research skills. (Prerequisite: RDG 032 or equivalent placement test score)

COL 104  STUDY SKILLS (BASIC VOCABULARY) 

1.0 Credit

College Skills 104 takes an intensive words-in-context approach to improve the students’ permanent word bank on a basic reading level.  This course is intended for students who need adequate vocabulary and reading skills to handle college level work.

This course is a study of the purposes of higher education and provides a general orientation to the functions and resources of the college. The course is designed to help freshmen adjust to the college community, develop a better understanding of the learning process, and acquire essential academic survival skills.

COL 106  SKILLS FOR COLLEGE SUCCESS

1.0 Credit

This course is designed to enhance the skills of entering freshmen to facilitate their ability to succeed in the college environment. The course topics include student/instructor expectations, time management, library/computer orientation, listening/note taking, studying for success, learning styles/personality types, and diversity and differences on campus. (Co-requisite: ENG 032)

COL 109  ADVANCED ACADEMIC SKILLS (ACTIVE ACADEMIC VOCABULARY) 

1.0 Credit

College Skills 109 takes a contextual approach to assist students in learning academic vocabulary words through a variety of readings, interactive exercises, writing, and self-tests with exposure to words across curriculums. (Prerequisite:  COL 104 or RDG 032)

ENG 010 DEVELOPMENTAL ENGLISH  (FAST TRACK) 

1.0 Credit

Developmental English is intended for students who need assistance in basic writing. Instruction is based on assessments of student needs and includes the writing of short compositions in which students demonstrate control of mechanics, word usage and sentence structure. This course develops basic paragraph-writing skills and focuses on presenting clear, precise main ideas that are supported with details and examples.

ENG 012 DEVELOPMENTAL ENGLISH  WORKSHOP 

1.0 Credit

This course provides support for mastery of English 032.  This class covers the basics of grammar and mechanics of the English language.  It is intended for students who need a refresher in grammar.  This course is designed to improve grammar and to upgrade writing skills.

ENG 032  DEVELOPMENTAL ENGLISH 

3.0 Credits

Developmental English is intended for students who need assistance in basic writing. Instruction is based on assessments of student needs and includes the writing of short compositions in which students demonstrate control of mechanics, word usage and sentence structure. HSS 100  CULTURAL CONTEXTS 

3.0 Credits

This course guides students through a survey of cultural concepts, provides a foundation for dealing with ideas and develops awareness of cultural diversity. This course does not meet the requirements for an associate degree, but may meet the requirements for a diploma or a certificate.

IDS 102  PERSONAL/CAREER ASSESSMENT 

3.0 Credits

This course covers an in-depth examination of the personal needs, wants, values, strengths, abilities and interests of an individual. Multiple inventories and evaluation strategies allow the student to evaluate and apply individual data to a personal career choice. (Prerequisite: RDG 032 or equivalent placement test scores)

IDS 201    LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

3.0 Credits

Explores the concept of leadership, including philosophy, ethics, and individual ability and style.  Designed to provide emerging and existing leaders the opportunity to develop and improve their leadership skills by integrating theoretical concepts and film study with the reality of application within a group setting. (Prerequisites: RDG 100, ENG 100)

MAT 010  DEVELOPMENTAL MATHEMATICS (FAST TRACK) 

1.0 Credit

Developmental mathematics is intended for students who need assistance in basic arithmetic skills. Instruction is based on assessments of student needs and includes performing the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents and an introduction to measurement and algebraic and geometric concepts. Word-problem skills are emphasized. This course also introduces students to operations with integers and rational numbers and to solving linear equations.

MAT 032  DEVELOPMENTAL MATHEMATICS 

3.0 Credits

Developmental mathematics includes a review of arithmetic skills , and focuses on the study of measurement and geometry, basic algebra concepts and data analysis. Application skills are emphasized.

INTRODUCTORY COLLEGE MATH 

5.0 Credits

This course includes the following topics in an algebraic context: mathematical methods, techniques, ways of thinking and problem solving. Graphing is introduced and geometrical applications are stressed. The course also reviews arithmetic operations and develops skills in operations with algebraic expressions, polynomials, algebraic fractions and solving linear equations. (This course does not meet the requirements for an associate degree, but may meet requirements for a diploma or certificate.) (Prerequisites: RDG 032 and MAT 032, or equivalent placement test scores)

RDG 010  DEVELOPMENTAL READING  (FAST TRACK)

1.0 Credit

Developmental Reading is intended for students who need improvement in basic reading skills. Based on assessment of student needs, instruction includes vocabulary, comprehension, use of reference materials and an introduction to analysis of literature.

RDG 012  DEVELOPMENTAL READING  WORKSHOP

1.0 Credit

This course provides support for mastery of Reading 032 competencies.

RDG 013 DEVELOPMENTAL READING  LAB

1.0 Credit

This course is designed to improve students’ reading comprehension skills and vocabulary through individualized and/or group instruction and practice reading.

RDG 032  DEVELOPMENTAL READING 

3.0 Credits

Developmental Reading is intended for students who need improvement in basic reading skills. Based on assessment of student needs, instruction includes vocabulary, comprehension, use of reference materials and an introduction to analysis of literature.

RDG 100  CRITICAL READING 

3.0 Credits

This course covers the application of basic reading skills to improve critical comprehension and higher order thinking skills. It gives students extensive practice with analytical and interpretative skills. (This course does not meet the requirements for an associate degree, but may meet requirements for a diploma or certificate. Prerequisites: RDG 032 or equivalent placement test scores.)

RDG 101  COLLEGE READING 

3.0 Credits

This course is designed to enhance reading efficiency by teaching students to effectively process and analyze information. It enables students to move through more demanding levels of comprehension, confront issues, make judgements and connect ideas. (This course is required for students who do not meet the reading requirements to enter Nursing, Health Sciences and Engineering Transfer programs. Prerequisites: ENG 032 and RDG 100 or equivalent placement test scores.)
