for Dental Hygiene Procedures
A South Carolina Board of Dentistry Approved Course
Infiltration Anesthesia for Dental Hygiene Procedures is a course that has
been designed by the faculty of the Midlands Technical College Allied Dental
Education Programs to meet the requirements necessary for participants to
take the S.C. Board of Dentistry exam on infiltration anesthesia. (Only
hygienists licensed in SC may take the board exam)
MTC Dental Hygiene students learn to administer local anesthesia in the fall
of their second year. After completing this section of the course, they will
spend a full semester demonstrating this skill with community clients. After
graduation, they are qualified to challenge the S.C. Board exam for
certification in infiltration anesthesia. South Carolina is one of the few
states in this part of the country that allows dental hygienists to
administer local anesthesia.
Important Dates: 2009
November 6, 13, 20, & December 4
Participants: Traditionally, participants have been licensed S.C. dental
hygienists who are taking the course in order to add this skill to their
practice. However, hygienists who are licensed in other states and dental
hygiene students are allowed to take the course.
The Course: The course consists of four full eight hours days that include
lecture, lab, and clinical experiences. Lectures include review of head and
neck anatomy and landmarks for local anesthesia, emergency procedures
related to infiltration anesthesia, and the pharmacology and math knowledge
needed to administer injections. During each of the four clinical
experiences, the participant will have the opportunity to administer local
anesthesia to another participant in the course. Clinical sessions will be
completed hands-on and will cover anesthesia of the maxilla and mandible for
dental hygiene procedures.
