Erica Roberson, Midlands Technical College
Class of 2006
Interviewed by Kenetta Pierce, Student Employment Services
Erica Roberson is a dental hygienist for Drs. Polly Paton and Julie Wehman. Erica is responsible for cleaning teeth, taking X-rays, and providing patients with oral hygiene instructions to promote healthy teeth and gums.
Graduating from Midlands Technical College in 2003 with an Associate degree in Marketing, Erica went on to research the Dental Hygiene field. “In my twenties, I had a few problems with my teeth, so I got to know my dental hygienist really well,” Erica said. As her interest level in the profession grew, she returned to Midlands Technical College to pursue an Associate of Health Science in Dental Hygiene. MTC provided Erica with the proper education and clinical practice that has helped her to reach her current level. “It’s a very tough curriculum. You need to be 100% committed and study hard.” Erica was able to juggle two part-time jobs while attending school, but flexibility was key. “Working [in addition to school] is possible but you need to have a flexible job. But the best option is not to work, if that is possible.” And she’s still able to put her marketing degree into practice, by suggesting dental products and cosmetic services.
Erica finds one-on-one communication with a variety of people the most rewarding part of the profession. Before she begins working with patients, she finds that a smile will go a long way. “On any given day, I have around 8 to 10 patients,” she adds. Erica works hard to make each patient feel comfortable. Keep in mind, a visit to the dentist is normally not something one wants to do. “I see a small number of patients that truly fear a trip to the dentist. More than half don’t have a strong like or dislike towards visiting the dentist— but they recognize it’s something that should be done.” Her outgoing personality, gentle spirit and natural ability to put people at ease are what make her so successful in the profession. “It’s a great career,” Erica explains. “Be sure to ask for a working interview so you can see how the office runs. Be picky when choosing an office. It is important to be happy where you work.”
When away from work, Erica enjoys scrapbooking, traveling, shopping and spending time with family. Erica’s ongoing goal is to continue to have a good working relationship with her patients and co-workers, while continuing to be a good mom to her son.
