How did Midlands Technical College help prepare you for your career field?  My associate degree gave me the fundamentals of business, finance and leadership.

What things do you find rewarding about your profession? Attending graduation is perhaps the most rewarding part of my job. It provides the evidence that the decisions I participate in that impact students, both directly and indirectly, contributed to the graduates’ success.

Are there aspects of your profession that you find stressful? There are three areas that are stressful for me in this position. 1. During budget crisis you are challenged to develop strategies that allow the college to serve students and allow the college to maintain its commitment to teaching and learning and its employees. 2. Legal issues of all kinds are ever increasing concerns and take a disproportionate amount of time. 3. Negative personnel actions are always stressful. Making decisions that may impact an individual’s livelihood always takes a lot from an individual who has to make decisions and deliver the message.

What do you see as the most important personal qualities someone considering going into your profession should have? You must be able to work in diverse and dynamic situations. You must have strong people, decision-making and leadership skills. You must be able to develop and support your subordinates and trust in their abilities. You must have sound fundamentals in business, finance and administration.

What advice do you have for students at Midlands Technical College who might be interested in entering your profession? Work hard, earn good grades and take advantage of the knowledge and experience of instructors by challenging them to share all they know. Students should also seek to become involved in the institution and their communities by not only joining but also seeking leadership opportunities in clubs, student government, civic and charitable activities.

Is there any other information you would like to share with students? This opportunity to learn should be cherished and at the same time exploited to gain all the knowledge available. It will have a profound affect on their personal and professional lives, the strength of their families and make their communities a better place to live.
