What are the typical duties of someone in your
position?Laboratory: Hematology, Clinical chemistry,
Coagulation, Urinalysis, Immunology, Reference lab
testing, Trouble shooting.
Safety: Maintain records; ensure annual training for
all employees and oversee all safety concerns for
the clinic.
How did Midlands Technical College help prepare
you for your career field? I received in depth study for each discipline in
laboratory technology as well as hands on experience
through clinical rotations. The program also
taught me how to think like a lab tech., especially
in the area of trouble shooting. Midlands
Technical College fosters an atmosphere for higher
learning.
What things do you find rewarding about your
profession? Doctors rely on the assurance that the laboratory
results they receive are accurate. I enjoy
taking the necessary measures to provide that
quality assurance. The most rewarding aspect
is working for the patients.
Are there aspects of your profession that you
find stressful? Yes. Multi-tasking is inevitable in this field
and being that I am a man; multi-tasking is not my
greatest strength.
What do you see as the most important personal
qualities someone considering going into your
profession should have? They should have the
ability to pay close attention to detail and
multi-task at the same time. They should have
a genuine concern for patient care.
What advice do you have for students at Midlands
Technical College who might be interested in entering
your profession? Be willing to study hard and
listen to your professors. Ask a lot of
questions.
Is there any other information
you would like to share with students?
Your brain is like a muscle, the more you work it
the stronger it gets.
