What are the typical duties of someone in your
position? I am charged with administering the
associations' grassroots advocacy program. My
primary responsibility is to mobilize school board
members statewide around legislative issues that
impact public education. I provide advocacy
training and technical assistance to local school
boards, develop advocacy program curriculums and
serve as a lobbyist. Public speaking and
coalition building are extremely important.
How did Midlands Technical College help prepare
you for your career field? Midlands Technical College provided me with an
opportunity to explore my career options. I
participated in two field practica. Those
experiences helped influence my decision to work to
facilitate change in public policy.
What things do you find rewarding about your
profession? I believe in people's ability to make
positive change happen. My work is rewarding
because I have an awesome opportunity to support,
encourage, coach, mentor, and serve as a change
agent for positive change.
Are there aspects of your profession that you
find stressful? I really love what I do, however,
if I had to choose one thing it would be playing in
the political minefield.
What do you see as the most important personal
qualities someone considering going into your
profession should have? Leadership skills
are important. It's also important to have
integrity and good work ethics, be honest, be
flexible, and be a good listener. Accepting of
diversity is critical. See value in others.
What advice do you have for students at Midlands
Technical College who might be interested in entering
your profession? First, find a mentor who is where
you want to be. I am fortunate to have mentors
who challenge my thinking, make me defend my
positions, push me when I sometimes want to rest,
brace my fall, and celebrate my successes.
Second, think outside the box; as a matter of fact,
bury the box in an unmarked grave.
Is there any other information
you would like to share with students? Never
stop seeking opportunities to learn. Find the
passion! The hardest job to do is one you
don't like. It's not enough just to care about
people, you must move into action. Volunteer
your time. We should always give back!
Read; know what's going on in the world.
