Company or Agency employed by:  Alpha Manufacturing, Inc.

Current position:
Machinist

Educational Preparation:   Associate in Machine Tool Technology - Midlands Technical College

What are the typical duties of someone in your position?Reading from a blueprint , I machine precision parts from raw steel.  I also build and design jigs and fixtures.

How did Midlands Technical College help prepare you for your career field?  Midlands Technical College provided me with excellent in-class instruction combined with superb lab experiences.

What things do you find rewarding about your profession? I get to make things with my hands.  At the end of the day I have something to look back on and say to myself, "I made that."  There's nothing more rewarding.

Are there aspects of your profession that you find stressful? Time deadlines and rush jobs.

What do you see as the most important personal qualities someone considering going into your profession should have?   An extreme willingness to learn, a good imagination, and a willingness to ask questions and accept new ideas.  Must also exhibit excellent work ethic and work well with others in a team environment.

What advice do you have for students at Midlands Technical College who might be interested in entering your profession? Study hard, listen to your professors, and go into the shop and do as much machining as you can.  There is no replacement for machine time and practice.  Be willing to accept that you are entering a field where the learning never stops and every day presents a new challenge you must overcome.

Is there any other information you would like to share with students?  Be sure to look at all of your employment options, big companies and small companies alike.  Each presents advantages and disadvantages.
