This program prepares students to apply biomedical, biophysical and psychosocial principles to the complex practice of the paramedic. An EMT-Paramedic is trained to respond quickly to trauma and medical emergencies and give competent care in pre-hospital settings. Paramedics perform medical emergency procedures in the absence of a physician. They are responsible for stabilizing a person’s condition from the time they arrive on the scene and during transportation until the patient reaches a medical emergency facility. Paramedics can work in a variety of settings including private ambulance and emergency medical services, hospitals, fire/rescue departments and industry.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the EMT-Paramedic has more advanced training to manage respiratory, cardiac and trauma emergencies. This program prepares students to administer medications orally and intravenously, use manual defibrillators, interpret electrocardiograms, perform endotracheal intubations, use monitors and other complex equipment.
Graduates of the program are eligible to take the certification examination offered by the national Registry of EMTs and are eligible to receive other state and national credentials.
