All students who expect to receive a degree, diploma or certificate from Midlands Technical College must complete all of the following requirements. Specific course requirements for each major are defined later in this catalog.
Regardless of the level of award, all students must meet the following requirements:
Satisfactory completion of all general education requirements and all academic major requirements specified for the award.
Completion of all program credit hours.
Completion of all academic course credit with a minimum of a cumulative 2.0 program Grade Point Average (GPA). In addition, certain programs may require higher GPAs in selected courses.
All financial obligations to the college must be fulfilled.
All proper applications for graduation must be completed by currently enrolled students during the term they plan to complete their academic requirements. The application due date is published online at the Midlands Technical College web site, www.midlandstech.edu/record/, in the Student Activities Calendar, the Class Schedule and the registration letter mailed to students each term.
General education core requirements are spelled out by each degree program (major). Programs may use different courses to meet general education core requirements. All of these courses are designed to prepare associate degree recipients to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and expertise:
Communication Skills – Graduates should be able to generate and comprehend written and oral communication that is appropriate for a variety of audiences, purposes and subjects.
Mathematics – Graduates should be able to understand and apply computational skills, quantitative reasoning and symbolic reasoning to evaluate and solve problems systematically.
Scientific Method – Graduates should understand and be able to use scientific methodologies and principles.
Individual and Social Behavior – Graduates should understand factors that influence behavior. They should recognize the complex and dynamic nature of human actions and experience.
Computer Skills – Graduates should possess the computer skills to locate, retrieve and synthesize data so as to create a document or presentation appropriate to the area of study.
Humanities – Graduates should understand the diversity of our cultural heritage and the effects of artistic or philosophical influences.
A minimum of 15 credit hours must be taken in general education courses.
In addition to these education core competencies, the faculty and staff of Midlands Technical College believe in the worth and dignity of each individual and seek to support student development in the following areas:
Clear Purpose – Graduates should be aware of personal goals and career opportunities. Using this knowledge, they should be able to initiate activity toward the attainment of these goals.
Flexibility and Tolerance – Graduates should develop an openness to diverse ideas, ambiguity and individuals who are different from themselves.
Healthy Lifestyles and Citizenship – Graduates should develop positive life management and citizenship skills that contribute to their personal well-being and the well-being of others.
Interpersonal Skills – Graduates should be able to work cooperatively in groups and related positively to diverse individuals.
Self-Confidence – Graduates should be confident of their skills, talents and experiences and willing to initiate actions using these talents.
Self-Sufficiency and Responsibility – Graduates should be confident of their ability to contribute effectively to their own learning, career, health, family, community and society.
Earn a minimum of 25 percent of the course work in residence at Midlands Technical College and be in attendance the term the award is conferred, unless an exception is approved by the department chair.
Completion of all other degree requirements.
Completion of at least eight semester hours in approved general education courses is required. These courses are specified by the program.

Each program contains specific requirements for graduation. Students should consult their certificate program advisor.
