The Computer-Aided Transcription Certificate is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in the medical, legal, governmental, insurance or private forums. Job opportunities include scoping and editing for court reporters, transcribing legal and medical documents and minutes of meetings, and transcribing law enforcement statements and incident reports.
In addition to the college’s placement test, specific admission criteria for regular enrollment into the Computer Aided Transcription certificate program include:
high school diploma or equivalent
typing skills
Students should be able to type at least 30 net words per minute prior to entry and possess above-average grammatical skills. Students will be expected to practice machine shorthand from three to six hours per day to acquire the necessary level of speed and accuracy to qualify as court reporters. Students are required to purchase their own shorthand machine and maintain adequate supplies of machine tape.
A grade of “C” or better is required in all courses; Three (3) tests each at a minimum of 95 percent on Literary, Jury Charge and Q & A at 120 WPM. Two, 5-minute timed writings at a minimum of 60 gross words per minutes with a maximum of five errors.
This certificate must be completed prior to entering the Court Reporting Certificate Program.
Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all of the courses offered within the Business and Information Systems Technology Departments for the grade to be counted toward graduation. Specifically, these include courses with the following prefixes: ACC, BAF, BUS, CPT, CRP, IST, LEG, MGT, MKT and OST.
