Advisors in the Advisement Center assist new students with their academic plans and provide information about college resources. Students are placed in appropriate courses for their major as determined by their placement testing. Every student at Midlands Technical College is assigned an academic advisor. New students with previous coursework at another college should bring a copy of their college transcript(s) to their advisement session. Students are provided either an academic program plan or a curriculum guide that lists the courses required for their major.
Academic Advisors are available to assist students in selecting courses appropriate to their academic program and career plans and to provide guidance relative to the student’s academic progress and in their program of study. Final course and schedule selection, however, is the responsibility of the student, not the advisor. Student’s responsibilities include:
Learning how to use the college’s online services and student e-mail system.
Exercising care to avoid enrolling in courses for which the prerequisites have not been completed.
Frequently checking the college’s assigned student e-mail account for important messages.
Planning college work to include courses not offered every semester
Determining graduation requirements and taking courses that meet the requirements.
Meeting the enrollment requirements of any scholarship programs for which they may be eligible.
Exploring transferability of courses and enrolling in those courses that are in line with their transfer plans.
Midlands Technical College’s online Advisement Manual provides a wide array of course and program planning tools for students and advisors.
