Computer-Aided Transcription Certificate

The Computer-Aided Transcription certificate is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in the medical, legal, governmental, insurance or private forums. Job opportunities include scoping and editing for court reporters and transcribing legal and medical documents and minutes of meetings, as well as law enforcement statements and incident reports.

Special Requirements

In addition to the college's placement test, specific admission criteria for regular enrollment into the Computer Aided Transcription certificate program include:

Students should be able to type at least 30 net words per minute prior to entry and possess above-average grammatical skills. Students will be expected to practice machine shorthand from three to six hours per day to acquire the necessary level of speed and accuracy to qualify as court reporters. Students are required to purchase their own shorthand machine and maintain adequate supplies of machine tape.

Students must earn a grade of "C" or better in all of the courses offered within the Business and Information Systems Technology departments for the grade to be counted toward graduation. Specifically, these include courses with the following prefixes: ACC, BAF, BUS, CPT, CRP, IST, LEG, MGT, MKT and OST.
