Mechanical Systems Technician

MECHANICAL SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATE

Mechanical Systems TechniciansAbout the Career

Mechanical systems technicians work in residential and commercial construction, industrial applications and in the development of consumer products. Such systems might include mechanical power transfer mechanisms, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) design, electrical system layout, and fluid systems such as plumbing for buildings, hydraulic power devices and mechanisms.

Advances in computer aided design (CAD) software allow designers to “construct” mechanical systems in a virtual three-dimensional world. The models can be constructed using predefined components, such as pipe, pipe fittings, water pumps and sinks. The computer system can then calculate the proper pipe sizes etc for the specific layout.

The system can also tally up how many fittings, sinks, etc. are required, and can automatically create a list of the required components. Three-dimensional models can also be created from scratch.  The 3D system can automatically check assembled parts to determine if the parts fit together correctly and components do not interfere with each other.

Mechanical systems technicians may employ computer models can be used to generate physical models on equipment called Rapid Prototyping machines.  Physical models are valuable when explaining design concepts to non-technical clients. These design and prototyping technologies are used in mechanical, architectural, civil, and industrial design applications so career possibilities are diverse.

AutoCADAbout the Program

The Mechanical Systems Certificate focuses on the design of mechanical devices and machines and mechanical systems for buildings.  To support the design process the program also provides a basic understanding of hydraulics and pneumatics, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, strength of materials, mechanism design, rapid prototyping and simulation.  Other certificate programs that can contribute to a career as a mechanical systems technician are described in the Manufacturing Design Technician section.
