CERTIFICATE IN OFFICE SUPPORT SPECIALIST
About the CareerThe role of the office professional has greatly evolved with the expansion of technology. Office automation and organizational restructuring have led administrative assistants to assume a wider range of new responsibilities once reserved for managerial and professional staff. For example, many administrative assistants now provide training and orientation for new staff, conduct research on the Internet, and operate and troubleshoot new office technologies. Despite the transition from paper to digital formats, their core responsibilities have remained much the same: coordinating an office’s administrative activities, storing, retrieving and integrating information for dissemination to staff and clients. Office professionals rely heavily on personal computers to create spreadsheets, compose correspondence, manage databases and create reports and documents via desktop publishing and using digital graphics. Secretaries and administrative assistants rank among the largest occupations in the U.S. economy.
About the ProgramThe Office Systems Technology program provides students with an opportunity to develop the skills needed to enter today’s office environment and advance to the top positions managing information. In addition to offering the traditional office skills courses, the program includes the use of microcomputers and in-depth training in word processing, database, spreadsheet and desktop publishing software packages.
The program also includes the Office Support Specialist Certificate program. This is a program for individuals who hold degrees re-entering the job market. This program will help them become up-to-date with advances in technology, and be sure their skills are current and marketable. The program includes a plan to articulate credits from area high schools and/or receive MTC credit for experience in the workforce.
