Overview:
Students completing the Human Services program are qualified to work in a variety of fields that require a basic understanding of the causes, nature and consequences of human behavior. Students will develop an understanding of how to assist others in managing their behavior in order to achieve full potential in educational, social, therapeutic and vocational settings.

Career opportunities exist in youth services and mental retardation facilities, substance abuse and geriatric services, child development programs, and mental health units. 

There are also opportunities in the areas of general social services. The background in behavioral science can be applied in a wide variety of areas. The choice of electives and field placements allowed in this curriculum permits students to prepare for specific interests in the areas in which they feel best suited to work.

The electives chosen by students to prepare them for certain specialties must be selected from the list of departmental electives found in the Human Services Student Handbook.


Mission Statement:
To prepare individuals to serve as knowledgeable, ethical and caring human service practitioners qualified to fill entry and middle level positions in the Midlands area as well as other geographic regions of South Carolina and beyond. 

Goals:

To create opportunities for students to clarify their personal and interpersonal values

To assist students in recognizing personal strengths and areas in need of development.

To enable students to develop intellectually from a generic, interdisciplinary foundation.

To establish a competent knowledge and informational base in the social and behavioral sciences from which appropriate and specific skills can evolve.

To design individualized and progressive practical field experiences for students to ensure meaningful application of knowledge and skills.

To work cooperatively in establishing articulation agreements with public, private and independent colleges and universities in order to maximize transfer opportunities.

To extend the Human Services program to the community as a resource for solving social problems to include mental health, homelessness, domestic violence, etc.

To encourage service to the community by supporting program-related organizations such as the Human Services Student Organization.

To develop strong partnerships with local, regional, state and federal level agencies and organizations to provide relevant and professional field experiences.

To provide ongoing assessment of career opportunities for Human Services graduates and to build relationships with potential employers.

Program Outcomes:

  1. Understand the importance of understanding the impact one’s personal values has on professional service delivery.

  2. Assess, plan, organize, implement and evaluate appropriate strategies designed to positively impact identified problem(s).

  3. Understand the basis for using the National Organization for Human Services Code of Ethics as a foundation for service delivery.

  4. Function as an employee in a human service agency or organization.

Degree Awarded:
Graduates of this program earn an Associate Degree in Public Service. In accordance with College policy, students must have an overall "C" average  (minimum 2.0 GPA) to graduate.

Special Requirements:

In order to complete the Human Services program, students must obtain a "C" or better in ENG 101 and ENG 102, BIO 110 and all departmental electives, as well as major course requirements. A 20- hour practicum is required as part of HUS 101, Introduction to Human Services, course. Additionally, 2 supervised field placements of 240 hours each are required. The program director is responsible for approving students for field placement based on documented readiness. SLED or background checks may be required of students interns by some agencies. Students are responsible for their transportation to and from practicum and field placement sites.

New students are required to successfully complete COL 105, Freshman Seminar, with a "C" or better. Students may be exempted with permission of program director.
