Frequently Asked Questions

How is this class different from a regular class?

You will use CourseCompass to do online homework as a required part (10%) of each test grade in the class. We will NOT use WebCT.  You will still meet the same amount of time as a regular class.

What is the advantage of the hybrid class?

bookThe online homework provides immediate feedback when you’re doing a problem. There are video clips, animations, and similar examples providing extra help for many of the problems. You can get guided solutions to a problem instead of struggling through a printed example in the text.  I have found that students who use CourseCompass have better success with math than students who study just from the text.

What if I don’t have a computer or internet access at home?

You will be at a disadvantage, but you can use the computers in the Academic Success Centers on the Airport or Beltline campus. Homework problems online can be done through a dial-up connection, but they load very slowly.  The MathXL software does not work with Firefox, so I recommend that you connect to the internet with Internet Explorer.  High-speed access is necessary for the videos and animations to work well (these are not required).

Do I have to attend an orientation meeting?

No. Information on CourseCompass and the Course ID for your class will be given the first day of class.

Tests:

There will be 5 tests during the semester in addition to the final exam. These tests will be given in Student Assessment (ASC 262) on Airport Campus.  These tests will need to be taken on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday during the testing center's hours. Test Center Information.  For help finding it, try campus maps.

MAT 101 tests will be available ONLY on certain announced test dates and only in the test center.

Final exam:  in our classroom (not in the test center)

What text is used?

0321500067 We use the same textbook that is used in MAT 101 and MAT 102: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra by George Woodbury. You need to be sure your text includes a Student Access Kit for CourseCompass. Look for the texts designated as “hybrid” in the bookstore. To use CourseCompass, you will need the access code from the Access Kit along with the Course ID I will provide.
book

The Access Code works for any CourseCompass class. Once it has been used, it is only good for the same textbook. So if you used CourseCompass in MAT 101 or 102, you do not need a new code. If you used CourseCompass in MAT 100, you do need a new Access Code. Buying online access costs $55 without the Student Access Kit. You can get more information at www.coursecompass.com.
