Housekeeping:  Please do not eat, drink (except water from closed containers), or smoke in class.  No unauthorized electronic devices allowed.

Set cell phones to silent or vibrate.   Take your stuff with you after class and remove trash.

Placement:        If you believe you might belong in a different math course, please see me the FIRST day of class for help in getting placed.  See department syllabus for course prerequisites.

Cancellation:     College closing announcements may be found on TV, radio, www.midlandstech.edu, or at 738-1400.  Check my website for course cancellation notices.

Attendance:      Midlands Tech offers courses many different ways.  Students may choose to take a distance-learning course if they have difficultly coordinating their lives around a traditional classroom schedule.  Students who are skilled with using a computer and who can primarily learn from the book without much direction from the teacher are encouraged to consider an online course.  Students who choose a traditional face-to-face course are bound by the attendance policy set by each department for the course.  The math department requires that students attend at least 90% of the scheduled class meetings.  This means that students may only miss 3 classes for a MW or TuTh course.  Other departments have different policies regarding the number of allowed absences. Please do not assume that this course works like some other course you are taking.

1.       Students are expected to come to class, on time, prepared to work.  Students who misbehave will be asked to leave and will be counted absent.

2.       Students who arrive after the instructor has called the roll, but are less than ten minutes late, will be counted tardy. Tardy students must make certain UPON ARRIVAL that the instructor has changed the absence to a tardy. If you do not hear your name called, assume you are marked absent.  Three tardies count as an absence

3.       Students who are not in the classroom for any reason, are at least ten minutes late, or who leave before class is dismissed will be counted as absent.  ALL absences are considered "unexcused", so save your absences for real emergencies.  Absences are counted from the first day of class whether you were enrolled or not.  Students who exceed the allowed number of absences will be withdrawn from the course by the instructor according to the math department policy.

4.       Students are responsible for all work and information given during a class whether present or absent at that class.  Students are expected to check with the instructor (in advance, if possible) when they miss a class, but not everything can be made up later.  MAKE-UP TESTS WILL NOT BE GIVEN. Tests may sometimes be taken a day early or a day late with good reason.  You must check with instructor to be certain that I will allow you to do this.  Make-up help will be entirely at the instructor's convenience and discretion.

Help:                Students who are claiming disability must go through the counseling area and be certified before I can make any accommodation.  A student with an immediate problem (can't see, can't hear, etc.) should let me know RIGHT THEN.  Homework questions should be addressed in my office or the Academic Success Center BEFORE THE NEXT CLASS begins so that you don't get further behind.  It is unfair to students who did their homework outside of class to expect them to spend their class time just sitting while you ask for personal tutoring.  A student with some on-going difficulty should see me during office hours as soon as the problem is recognized so that we can try to remedy the situation.  I can't guarantee that every request will be honored to your satisfaction, but if you don't even tell me you have a problem, how can I be expected to help you? You should always call me if you have a question or an immediate concern (such as you need to miss a test).

Success:          I want you to be successful in this course.  Previous knowledge and experience, natural ability, and your interest in the topics we cover will all affect the amount of time and effort it takes for you to learn this material.  You are not exactly like anyone else, so you cannot compare the amount of time and effort you spend or the grades you receive as a result of your efforts to anyone else.  In general, you need to plan on about two hours of work outside of class for every hour in class.  Most people will experience a few rough spots in a semester.  You need to assume from the first day of class that you might need help at some point.  Allow plenty of time in your schedule to visit my office and/or go to the Academic Success Center.  If your schedule is not flexible, this may not be the right course for you.  If you find yourself struggling from the very beginning or having to spend a ridiculous amount of time on the course, talk with me about it before you simply drop the course.  Be sure you keep up DAILY and come to my office for help as soon as you realize you are having trouble.  If you only have time to sit in class and nothing else, then you don't have time to take this course.  Please take this course when you have more time.  If you feel you already know most of this material, see me immediately about taking a placement test.

Calculator:        The math department recommends using a scientific calculator for MAT 101 and 155.  The math department recommends using a TI-83, TI-83+, or TI 84 for all other courses.

Tests:               Tests will be given in Student Assessment (ASC 262).  Bring a picture ID with you to the Test Center.  Each test may consist (in part) of grades from homework, quizzes, and/or assignments, counted as a part of each test grade in addition to the usual types of test questions.  MAKE-UP TESTS WILL NOT BE GIVEN. Tests may sometimes be taken a day early or a day late with good reason.  You must check with instructor to be certain that I will allow you to do this.

1.       Homework assignments through MyMathLab (www.coursecompass.com) will be made.  Homework questions should be answered before the next class meeting.  Homework will count 10% of each test grade, and  an assignment/quiz may be used to verify that the student understands the material.  It is the student’s responsibility to do the homework and learn the material.  Missed in-class assignments, activities and quizzes often CANNOT be made up, but the student should check with me.  In any case, if a student is absent, the homework and/or missed work that I allow to be made up must be in my hands BEFORE the next class begins.

2.       Several tests will be given.  You will have at least one major test graded and returned to you before midterm plus your in-class experiences on which to make your decision to stay or withdraw.

Exams: All exams will be given in our classroom, not the Testing Center.

Consult www.midlandstech.edu for Spring 2009 exam schedule.

Grading:           Test1+Test2+Test3+Test4+Test5+Exam-Lowest Test = Average

NOTE:  Instructor reserves the right to make adjustments in the timeline, course syllabus and in grading tests, but final letter grades will be assigned by math department policy.                   (Spring 2009)
