MAT
120 Long-Term Assignment:
What is normal body temperature?
Take your own temperature each day for 30 days. Record your temperature each day. Measure in degrees Fahrenheit. Take 30 other people’s temperatures (one time per person) and record those numbers. Use good sense and good hygiene about taking temperatures. Write so I can read your numbers.
You should turn in each part ahead of the due
date, get my comments, then redo that part (if necessary).
Allow time for me to respond to you, return your work, and you still have
your revised work in on time. Each part must be completed, turned
in on time, and be done in an acceptable fashion in order to get
any credit for this assignment. LATE

I.
Data Preliminary data check due on 6/5,
Keep a copy for yourself.
Final numbers DUE on 6/26.
Keep a copy for yourself.
You need to make 30 measurements for each group.
That is, 30 measurements of your self on 30 different days and 30
measurements one time each for other people.
At the preliminary check you may have less than 30 measurements, but I
need to see how your numbers are looking while you still have time to start over
if you aren’t getting good data so give me at least 7 good readings for
yourself and 7 for other people.
(10 points--Preliminary data, 10 points—Final data)
II. Statistics
(Due 7/1) Once again,
turn in each individual measurement for yourself and for your group of other
people. Calculate summary statistics for each group (ie, mean, median,
mode, sample standard deviation, standard error of the mean). These must
be correct to at least thousandths place.
IF you round after that, it must be done correctly.
Keep a copy for yourself. (20 points total)
III. Confidence
interval (Due 7/10) Create
a 95% confidence interval about the mean for yourself, then create a 95%
confidence interval for your group of others. (20 points total)
IV. Sample
size (Also due 7/17)
Based on your group’s
data, how large a sample size would you need to have in order to be 95%
confident that you are within 0.1 degree of correct body temperature?
Use the population standard deviation from your group’s data for s.
(10 points total)
V.
Hypothesis Test (Due
7/24)
a) Do an appropriate
hypothesis test to determine if there is a significant difference between the
accepted value of 98.6o and your average body temperature.
Write out your conclusion in an appropriate mathematical manner.
(15 points)
b) Do an appropriate
hypothesis test to determine if there is a significant difference between the
accepted value of 98.6o and your group’s average body
temperature. Write out your
conclusion in an appropriate mathematical manner.
