About the Southeastern Assessment Institute at Midlands Technical College

The MTC Assessment Institute is now the Southeastern Assessment Institute at Midlands Technical College. It was established to assist faculty, staff and administrators in understanding the student learning outcomes assessment process in order to improve student learning, thus ensuring continuous improvement. The institute covers all parts of the assessment process: assessing student learning, collecting data, analyzing and interpreting the data, implementing changes for improvement, and finally following up to determine whether the change deployed actually improved student learning (or closing the loop).

What to Expect in 2014

This one-and-a-half-day workshop includes beginner’s and intermediate tracks as well as some new offerings. Our beginner’s track gives an overview of student learning outcomes assessment (The ABCs of SLOs) and then the steps to getting started with student learning outcomes assessment. The intermediate track includes effective sampling, data analysis, closing the loop, assessing subjective material, identifying and writing outcomes and competencies, streamlining your SLOs process, and common pitfalls to watch out for in SLO assessment. This year we will also have a track on teaching and a session on using online tools to collect SLO data.
