Academic Advising
SOME HANDY SELF-SCHEDULING DEFINITIONS

ADVISOR - a faculty or staff member whose responsibility is to provide academic guidance to students - also referred to as an academic advisor or a program advisor. The advisor places the student in courses based on test scores, college transcripts or a combination of both. The advisor explains program requirements, answers transfer questions, and refers the student to resources available to help achieve academic goals. The advisor fills out the advisement form, listing any courses and alternates, signs the form and directs the student to Online Student Services to select course sections.

ASSISTANT, ONLINE STUDENT SERVIVCES - a staff member employed in Online Student Services whose responsibility is to teach students how to use MTC Online to perform a variety of tasks such as: accessing the Campus Cruiser email system, look up available courses, check their Financial Aid status, and more.

ACADEMIC ADVISING - a decision-making process during which students realize their maximum educational potential through communication and information exchanges with an advisor.

SCHEDULING - the selection of course sections to include the campus, days of the week and times for each course in which the student plans to enroll.

PROGRAM PLAN - a list of courses with prerequisites required for graduation for a program of study. Also includes important information the student should know when registering for courses. Used in the self-scheduling process.

ADVISEMENT CENTER - the office where full-time academic advisors advise first time college students and specified Health Sciences and Nursing preparatory track and qualified students.

ONLINE STUDENT SERVICES - the room where students can go to learn how to use MTC Online and look up available courses for an upcoming term.

DATA ENTRY/RECORDS - depending on the student’s status after advisement and determining available courses a student must take their advisement form to the data entry/records office. At data entry/records the student's course schedule will be keyed into the computer if the advisement form has been signed by an advisor. The student will be given a printed copy of their class schedule at data entry/records. A student who is not web-enabled to do online registration must go to data entry in order to register for classes.

CASHIER - the office where students go to pay their tuition and fees after they have had their courses keyed into the computer at data entry.
