2nd Semester Advisement

Let’s talk about advisement for your second semester when you are no longer a new student, but a Continuing student.

Let’s go over a few basics about where to go and what to do:

First, you will not come to the Advisement Center.

Instead, you will meet one-on-one with an Instructor in your Major who will be your advisor.

Second, you will need to make an appointment with an advisor.

Check the school calendar for the date registration begins. About two weeks before registration begins, call the number of the contact listed for your program and campus in the Registration Guide, (available at the Information Center) or visit www. midlandstech.edu/advisement.

It’s helpful to keep the name of the advisor, the time and date of the appointment, and the office number of your advisor as a reminder. Also keep the name and number of the contact person who makes the appointment.

Don’t forget to ask the contact person for directions to the advisor’s office if you need to. You don’t want to miss your appointment! It may be difficult to reschedule during the busy advisement period. However, if you must reschedule, call the contact person who made your appointment as soon as possible.

Third, your advisement session will be more successful if you take these steps before your appointment to prepare.

Make sure you are familiar with the requirements of your chosen program by reviewing the college catalog or visiting www. midlandstech.edu/advisement.

After midterm, review the Registration Guide which lists courses being offered for the next semester, or visit the on-line Course Search.

During the semester, if you think of questions, make a list to discuss with your advisor. Using the course listings, prepare a sample schedule of the classes you want to take.

Fourth, it’s time for your meeting!!

Be on time and bring a pen and paper.

You and your advisor will talk about courses you will need to take to meet all the requirements of your major. You can also ask questions about your career track or job goals.

The two of you will also talk about your progress and your grades as well as any work and family commitments you have. Your advisor will help you stay on track to successfully complete your goals at Midlands Tech.

Then, you will schedule and register for your classes. Your advisor will tell you if you can register on-line or if you should go to Records.

If you are a transfer student, your advisor can answer general questions about transferring, but keep in mind, you are responsible for understanding and meeting the requirements of the college you want to transfer to.

Just for your information:

Advisement generally begins about one and one-half weeks after midterm

If you have questions about being advised, you may contact the Advisement Center.

Also, you may e-mail general questions or comments regarding advisement to Advisement@midlandstech.edu

There are a few exceptions you need to be aware of: If you are in the Pre-Health or Pre-Nursing majors and have not completed all 100-level courses you must be advised in the Advisement Center.

Also, if you want to take a 10-week or session 2 course, you will be advised in the Advisement Center no matter what your major is.

In conclusion, doing your part in planning your academic goals with your advisor, and staying on track at Midlands Tech will help to make your educational experience much more positive and successful.
