PRE-HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

DESCRIPTION:
A program to provide the student with the general education competencies required to enter the technical, clinical phase (Phase II) of the Health Information Management Program. The Student will gain skills in written and oral communication, math, science, psychology, problem solving, research, and computers which are needed as a foundation for success in the HIM profession.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Completion of the Pre-Health Care Certificate with a 2.5 GPA or higher
OR
HOBET Composite 50 % Reading 50%, Math 50 % , Algebra 50% MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
SAT Total 910 Verbal 430; MAT 440 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
ACT 19 Comp Verbal 17; Mat 23 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OTHER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • High School credits in Math/Science/English (Algebra, Biology, and English) are recommended.
  • A pre-admission interview is required.
  • Physical Exam (form Completed upon entering first semester; see details in program notes).
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification at time of entry.

 

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of 38 semester credit hours are required to complete the Pre-Health Information Management Certificate.
  • Students must complete all Health Information Management courses and all science and math courses with a grade of "C" or better and may repeat no more than two technology courses.

PROGRAM NOTES:

  1. Movement into the second phase is achieved by successful completion of the certificate with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
  2. All courses in the certificate must be completed by the summer term prior to expected enrollment in Phase II.
  3. Health Information Management courses must be taken in sequence.
  4. One or more of the objective criteria for admission may be waived or modified for certain highly qualified applicants.
  5. If the biology credit was earned more than 3 years before entering the program the biology must be refreshed with BIO 112. Both CPT 101 and MAT 120 must be taken within 3 years of program entry or they must be repeated.
  6. Course substitutes must be approved by the Program Director.
  7. Transfer of credit from other colleges/universities must be approved by the Program Director.

  10. Students must provide their own transportation to and from clinical. All clinicals are located in a 50 mile radius of the college.
  11. Upon graduation, the student will be eligible to apply to write the national exam for certification as an Accredited Record Technician (ART).
  12. Physical Exam (complete physical)
  13. Students will be expected to join their professional organization, American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)  external link as they begin their professional coursework (HIM 101).

  NOTE: The physical exam and certification in CPR and First Aid must be completed prior to beginning the program.
