DESCRIPTION:
The Pre-Dental Hygiene curriculum is Phase I of the two-phase Dental Hygiene Program. This program provides the student with the general education competencies required to enter the clinical phase of the Dental Hygiene Program. The student will gain skills in written and oral communication, math, science, psychology, sociology, problem solving, research and computers which are needed as a foundation for success as a dental hygienist.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of 36 semester credit hours is required for certificate completion. In addition to a
2.5 GPA, a minimum grade of "C" must be attained in all science and math courses. Science courses must not be completed more than 3 years prior to completion of the certificate curriculum. No course in the certificate program many be repeated more than once. Additionally, no more than two different courses may be repeated. (A withdrawal counts as an attempt.)
PROGRAM NOTES:
- Students may not retake any course in the Pre-Dental Hygiene certificate program more than once. The student may not repeat more than two different courses in the Pre-Dental Hygiene certificate after the pre-entry interview has been conducted.
- A pre-admission interview is required prior to acceptance.
- All courses in the certificate program must be completed prior to the Fall entry into the Dental Hygiene Phase II.
- Preclinical practice is performed on classmate clients. Students accepted into Phase II of the Dental Hygiene program will be expected to act as clients for classmates to practice all new skills, including infiltration anesthesia injections.
- One or more of the objective criteria for admission may be waived or modified for certain highly qualified applicants.
- Transfer of credit courses will be determined by Program Director. (Formal contracts exist for transfer of the PreDental Hygiene Certificate from some neighboring Technical Colleges. Students from these colleges should contact the Health Science advisors at these colleges for information.)
