DESCRIPTION:
To prepare students in the area of medical coding in order to fulfill employment needs of hospitals and other health care providers in rural and local areas of South Carolina. MTC offers medical record coder training via live broadcast of lectures and laboratory instruction to rural areas of South Carolina as well as locally on the Airport Campus. Live clinical experience will be in the student's home community.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Completion of the Pre-Health Care Certificate with a 2.5 GPA or higher
OR
HOBET Composite 46 % Minimum Reading 46 % MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
SAT Total 840 Minimum Verbal 400 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
ACT 18 Comp Minimum Verbal 17 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OTHER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Passing score on NLN (RN) or NLN (PN) preadmissions test as determined by the Nursing Program.
  • High School credits in Math/Science/English (Algebra, Biology and English) are recommended
  • Typing Skills
  • A pre-admission interview is required.
  • Current first aid certification at time of program entry

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of 37 semester credit hours are required to complete this certificate. A minimum grade of "C" must be attained in all math and science courses.

PROGRAM NOTES:

  1. Courses may not be repeated more than one time.
  2. If the student requires a Developmental Math course they must complete MAT 100.
  3. Students will be expected to join their professional organization, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)external link as they begin their first semester.
  4. Distance learners who are concurrently enrolled at one of the other technical colleges must be academically ready to take the first curriculum course in the Medical Record Coder program.
