HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
Associate in Health Science - Phase II (HIM)

DESCRIPTION:
A program designed to provide instruction, knowledge and skills in health information systems and procedures. The student will be trained to technically analyze and evaluate highly sensitive data in health records according to standards; compile various types of administrative and health statistics for use in planning and evaluating; code signs, symptoms, diseases, operations, procedures, and other therapies; supervise the day-to-day operations in a Medical Record Department; release highly sensitive health care data; and maintain and utilize a variety of manual and automated health information systems.
In addition, the student will receive detailed instruction in medical, ethical, legal, accreditation and regulatory requirements for the health care delivery system. The student will complete five semesters of intensive course-work in Health Information Science. The experience includes, but is not limited to, laboratory and clinical experience at local health care facilities.

| OTHER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
- Completion of Pre-Health Information Management with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
The GPA for progression into HIM is based on all General Education courses taken in the
certificate (Pre-HIM). These courses must be taken at a regionally accredited college.
Only 2 courses may be repeated in an attempt to raise the GPA.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- High School credits in Math/Science/English (Algebra, Biology, and English) are recommended.
- A pre-admission interview by the Health Information Management Interview Committee is required.
- Physical Exam (form Completed upon entering first semester; see details in program notes).
- Current First Aid and CPR certification at time of entry.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of 78 semester credit hours is required for graduation. A minimum grade of "C" must be attained in all Health Information Management courses and all science and math courses.
PROGRAM NOTES:
- Health Information Management courses must be taken in sequence.
- One or more of the objective criteria for admission may be waived or modified for certain highly qualified applicants.
- If the biology credit was earned more than 3 years before entering the program the biology must be refreshed with BIO 112. Both CPT 101 and MAT 120 must be taken within 3 years of program entry or they must be repeated.
- Course substitutes must be approved by the Program Director.
- Transfer of credit from other colleges/universities must be approved by the Program Director.

- Students must provide their own transportation to and from clinical. All clinicals are located in a 50 mile radius of the college.
- Students will be expected to maintain their student membership to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).  
Students are strongly advised to attend the South Carolina Health Information Management Association regional and annual meetings.
- Upon graduation, the student will be eligible to apply to write the national exam for certification as an Accredited Record Technician (ART).
- Physical Exam (complete physical)
NOTE: The physical exam and certification in CPR and First Aid must be completed prior to beginning the program.
