DEFINITIONS RELATED TO THE ADVISEMENT
AND SCHEDULING PROCESS

WHO

ADVISOR - a faculty or staff member whose responsibility is to provide academic guidance to students. Also referred to as an academic advisor or a program advisor. The advisor places the student in courses based on test scores, college transcripts or a combination of both. The advisor explains program requirements, answers transfer questions, and refers the student to resources available to help complete academic goals. The advisor fills out the advisement form, listing any courses and alternates, signs the form and directs the student to Online Services Center to select course sections.

CONTINUING STUDENTS - After students have completed one semester of college course work they are considered continuing students. Students seeking advisement for their second semester must see a program advisor in their major.

  • If a student's major is one that participates in online registration, the student will meet with a program advisor who after meeting with the student will determine if the student may participate in online registration. The advisor will highlight any necessary prerequisite courses and explain the student's academic program and discuss program requirements. The advior will then web-enable the student. The advisor will direct the student to Online Services Center to select their courses and register. For future semesters, web-enabled students have the option of using online registration or making an appointment with a program advisor.

  • If a student's major is a program that does not participate in online registration, the student will meet with a program advisor. The program advisor will list required courses and any alternates on the student's advisement form, sign the form, and direct the student to Online Services Center to select course sections. If the student's major area is an allied health or nursing program and if the student has qualified, been accepted, and has enrolled in an allied health or nursing program, the student will meet with a program advisor. If a student's minor is an allied health or nursing program and the student has not completed 100 level courses the student is advised in the Advisement Center.

NEW STUDENTS (FIRST SEMESTER) - After admission to Midlands Technical College, students are directed to make an appointment with an academic advisor.
  1. New students with a declared major* and with no previous college course work at MTC or any other accredited college should make an appointment with an advisor in one of the Advisement Centers. The new student advisor using the advisement manual, test scores, MTC catalogue and other resources will discuss the student's academic program, give the student information about college resources and future advisement and will list the required courses and any alternates on the student's advisement form, sign the form, and direct the student to Online Services Center to select course sections.
  2.

The following programs prefer to advise their own new students:

The program advisor will list the required courses and any alternates on the student's advisement form, sign the form, and direct the student to Online Services Center to select course sections.
  4. Transient Students who are intending to transfer credit to another institution may be advised by the Advisement Center if they have a transient student form from their home school. If they do not have a transient form, they must see a program advisor and meet prerequisite requirements for the course they want to enroll in.
